West Ham winger Jarrod Bowen is satisfied that he has given a good impression of himself during his first England call-up but is aware he has to keep proving himself in order to secure a place in Gareth Southgate’s World Cup squad later this year.
Bowen, who had never represented England at any level prior to this month, earned his place in the squad thanks to outstanding Premier League form that yielded 12 goals and 10 assists last season.
The 25-year-old featured in all three of England’s UEFA Nations League games against Hungary, Germany and Italy so far this month, starting the former in Budapest and playing the full 90 minutes.
"When I came in it was all new and it was about showing what I am about on the pitch and off the pitch as a person," Bowen said. “I think I've done that with the game time that I've had. I didn't know if I was going to play any minutes coming here."
He would not look out of place in future England squads. But further call-ups will only come in if Bowen can remain consistent with his form.
Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho both missed out on selection this month, while Jesse Lingard could provide further competition if he hits the ground running with a new club. Emile Smith Rowe is another attacking player who has been in the picture in recent months.
"You never know if you are going to play or if you're not," Bowen continued. "I am grateful to play the minutes that I have with one game left as well. I don't want to say that I've made [the World Cup squad]. I don't want to change my approach or my way of playing because it has got me here."
