Labant Injury Short Term

Vladimir Labant was handed a rare start on Monday when Glenn decided to rest Nigel Winterburn for the clash with Fulham at Craven Cottage. It only lasted about 20 minutes though, when a challenge by Louis Saha forced him to go off.

At first it was feared that the injury may be quite serious, but thankfully an x-ray on Tuesday revealed only bruising to the muscle in the back. Club doctor, Ges Steinbeirgs, told the official site that it won't keep him out for long.

"Thankfully the x-ray is clear, because it could have been broken ribs or damage to the spine, which would easily have ended his season. As it is, this is the best possible result, although he was very stiff after the game and is still sore today.

"We won't know for certain for a few days if he will be available at the weekend; if the spasm lifts quickly it might be okay, but it is the back's way of preventing further damage - and it is painful. He is having painkillers, and hopefully that will do the trick."

It is expected that Nigel Winterburn will be given the left back position on Saturday when West Ham face Charlton at Upton Park looking for their third win in three games. And fans will be hoping that the Hammers can get somewhere near the 5-0 thrashing of last season.
