West Ham United striker Javier Hernández has claimed he won't be drawn on his plans for the future until the end of the current campaign, as the east London side look to secure Europa League football for next season.
The Mexican ace joined the Hammers from Bayer Leverkusen in 2017, after a fine spell with the Bundesliga side. This season, the clinical striker has struggled for regular first team football, and has made just 11 Premier League starts despite fellow forwards Andy Carroll and Marko Arnautović suffering a series of injuries throughout the campaign.
Speaking to the Hammers' official website, 'Chicharito', whose current deal expires in 2020, was questioned on whether he would be extending his stay at the club, and said: "I’m only thinking about [the next match against]Cardiff, working for the coach to give me the chance to start again, play my best, score goals and help the team.
"That’s my future at the moment, as for the rest we will speak when the season is over, right now we just need to play well so we can finish in a European spot. This club is in a transition in which it wants to qualify every year for Europe, that’s the idea and that’s why they hired this coaching staff and a lot of players."
The Hammers are clearly not shy of spending money, and may look to sign a shiny new striker in the summer; of course, the quality of this potential acquisition will depend largely on whether they qualify for European football.
The question will be whether Hernández is willing to continue playing a bit-part role for the club, or will look to move on in order to reignite his career.
Reports have suggested the Hammers could snap up Roma striker Edin Džeko in the summer upon the expiry of his contract, which would almost certainly send Hernández even further down the pecking order. The 33-year-old won two Premier League titles with Manchester City, and could prove a fine addition to Manuel Pellegrini's side.
