He looks set to lose his solitary England cap though after FIFA hinted that last weeks game against Trinidad & Tobago may be downgraded because England used seven substitutes.

Ashton pledged to repay the Hammers fans that have stuck by him through his injury nightmare by scoring lots of goals next season. "I am delighted. I said all along that I wanted to sign. I feel I have still got a lot to show the football club and the fans," he told the official site.

"I am really happy that I have signed and now I can look forward to next season.

"At the start of the season the fans didn't see the best of me. Towards the end, they hopefully saw that I was back to what they expect.

"I know I had a few fans who were perhaps weren't sure that I would get back to my best but I feel like I am only going to get better.

"Hopefully I can again play even better next season, score more goals and play more games."

Ashton's excitement about next season may have turned slightly sour this morning after a number of media outlets reported that FIFA may deem England's match against Trinidad & Tobago void because England broke official FIFA rules by playing 7 substitutes despite belief from the England camp that they had a special prior agreement to do so.

A FIFA spokesman said, "We can confirm that FIFA did not give special dispensation to make up to seven substitutions at the Trinidad and Tobago versus England match.

"We have spoken internally at FIFA about the matter and nobody allowed this to happen."
