About Time Too

It is almost 50 years since the World Cup winning captain made his debut for the Hammers and it seems the Upton Park hierarchy are finally determined to properly honour the man that brought so much to the club.

Bobby's widow Stephanie Moore told the official site, "The legendary No6 shirt is synonymous with Bobby and his triumphant and illustrious footballing career. Its retirement signifies deep respect, affection and admiration for all that Bobby achieved and all that he represented in this marvellous game of ours.

"Thank you, West Ham."

In addition to the retiring of the shirt, a billboard featuring the number 6 will be ever-present in the corner of the Boleyn Ground this season to mark the significance of the length of time since Bobby made his debut.

The current number 6 Matty Upson admitted he was pleased to see one of his idols being remembered in such a way.

"I think it's a fitting contribution by the club to retire the No6 shirt in tribute to Bobby Moore. I am honoured to be the last player to wear the No6. I will miss it, but I am glad that is being retired in honour of such a fantastic player and a true club legend."
