The 21-year-old central defender had been widely tipped to be included in Sven’s last friendly squad before he names the 23 players going to the World Cup in the summer.

He told Sky Sports News, “I would be lying if I said I didn't (feel a bit disappointed). Definitely, I was looking out for it but I wasn't too disappointed because I know how many players there are in my position.

“I'm still coming to play for the Under-21s squad so there's nothing to be disheartened about.

“I've got time ahead of me, I'm confident enough in my ability and there are some good players in my position. Players, who are not too far from being the best in the world so it's definitely going to be hard but hopefully I can keep playing well and people will recognise it.

“You never know - football's a funny game. I'm going to keep on playing my football and if I get the call then I do, and if not then I'm still going to watch my brother.”
