Ashton makes England bow

Having been called up twice previously, only for injuries to deny the Hammers front-man his chance in the spotlight, Ashton looked nervous but did link up well with former Hammer Jermaine Defoe.

Ashton played the first 45 minutes and had one decent chance that he should really have converted, blazing over from a David Beckham cross.

Speaking after the game he said, "Personally I probably could have done a little bit better,"

"It would have been nice to get a goal, but it wasn't to be. I was pleased with how it went and happy to get 45 minutes.

"It's been a long wait to get that first cap and it feels brilliant. Nobody can take it away from me, but hopefully I've done enough to impress for the next squad."
