Brown told the Sun newspaper “This summer Alan will be working on a budget of £20m in salaries and transfers.”

Brown also pledged that he would hang on to the club's rising young stars – “We've another batch coming through and it's important we bring on young players.

“This next batch of kids won't go the same way as the last generation provided we consolidate in the Premiership.

“There isn't the level of debt we had when we got relegated — it's gone now.  There was never any chance for us going under like other big clubs because we acted quickly after relegation two years ago.

“It's hard to sell great players you have had since they were kids but we took the pain early.

“If, God forbid, we came down again it would be different. It would be like Charlton or West Brom when they came up and went down. We won't have to sell a lot of players.”
