Charlton Match Preview Part 2

Nigel: Returns after rest
Last season, Charlton came to Upton Park on Boxing Day, and gifted the Hammers faithful with a belated Christmas present when they succumbed to a five - nil thrashing at the hands of the mighty Irons.

Since then though, the two sides have fought out a 1-1 draw and a 4-4 draw at the valley, with the latter of those two fixtures featuring an astonishing hatrick from the Hammers Paul Kitson - who had ironically been on loan with the Addicks at the end of the 99/00 season.

West Ham should once more be able to field a very strong side, with England goalie, David James in goal. Christian Dailly picked up his fifth booking of the season on Monday will not be suspended, as the cut off for the five booking suspension date was the end of February.

Therefore Christian will line up alongside Tomas Repka, with Sebastien Schemmel expected to be at right back, and Nigel Winterburn will replace Monday's injury victim, Vladimir Labant, on the left. It is unlikely that Ian Pearce will be handed a starting place, although he might come on some time in the second half.

The midfield will feature Steve Lomas and Trevor Sinclair either side of our two England starlets, Joe Cole and Michael Carrick. Fredi Kanouté and Paolo di Canio will probably line up in attack, with Jermain Defoe having to settle for the bench against his former club.

The bench should also feature Shaka Hislop, John Moncur, Ian Pearce, the aforementioned Jermain Defoe and one other - possibly the recently recovered Shaun Byrne.

As for the result - if West Ham can avoid complacency - it should be a win for the Hammers, with home advantage and a very strong line up. However, prior to last season, the Addicks have ground out two 1-0 victories at Upton Park - and with this being a London derby, there should be a good fight on show.
