Curbs Gone

The board has consistently undermined the manager after selling Anton Ferdinand against his wishes and then selling McCartney back to Sunderland after Curbs had gone on record saying that no other players were leaving the club before the transfer deadline.

The club seemingly failed to replace McCartney until yesterday tea-time when they announced that they had secured two new signings in the shape of Italian striker David Di Michele and McCartney's replacement Congolese player Herita Llunga.

Curbishley clearly had no idea about any of these signings and subsequently considered his position last night before handing in his resignation this morning.

The club have issued a statement clarifying their position on the sale of McCartney and the clubs' transfer activity this summer but they fail to mention Curbishley's departure.

"The transfers of Anton Ferdinand and George McCartney along with the release of Freddie Ljungberg were right for the club and decisions had to be taken based on our best long-term interests," the statement reads

"In the past week, agreement could not be reached with Ferdinand on a new contract to replace his original deal that had just two years left to run while McCartney handed in a formal written transfer request after failing to resolve his personal reasons for wanting a move away."
