The 21-year-old centre-back joined Spurs from Coventry City a couple of weeks ago for a fee that could reach £3million and links up with the Hammers to gain regular first-team action.

Upton Park boss Alan Pardew told the club's official website: "He's someone we've been looking at for a long time, but obviously Tottenham were able to sign him.

"He's good in the air - an area where we have been lacking - and the move allows him and his young family to settle in the London area.

"He didn't have to come here, but his decision shows great strength of character."

Earlier, sporting director Frank Arnsen had told Spurs' official website: "It was important that Calum went on loan to a club where he would get first-team football to enhance his experience.

"It was equally important that the move was to a London-based club so that he would not have to relocate again and would be able to train with us on an occasional basis.

"This will enable him to get to know the other lads and more about Tottenham Hotspur. As such this arrangement has many mutual benefits."
