Defoe: New contract
Jermain Defoe is without doubt the hottest prospect at Upton Park currently, with Joe Cole and Michael Carrick having developed into players somewhat more advanced than prospects.

And it won't be long before a player of his calibre is tempted by a big money offer from a 'bigger' club, and as such, management at Upton Park have to negotiate new, better deals to keep him around. That is the status at the moment regarding the England U21 striker - who scored the first goal in last night's match against Switzerland U21s.

Currently on a rather modest contract (for a Premiership footballer at least) of around £3,000 a week, his new contract will probably edge near to Joe Cole's and Michael Carrick's - about £20,000 a week.

He will sit down with Glenn and Paul Aldridge, the Hammers MD, when he returns from the European U21 Championships, and iron out the details. Having been our top scorer this season, with only a handful of starts - it goes to show how important the youngster is for us, and it is good to see that those in charge at Upton Park can see just how important he is.
