Defoe Set For New Contract

Jermain set for big bucks
Jermain Defoe was brought to Upton Park by Harry Redknapp from Charlton Athletic in July 1999, when he declined to sign a senior contract at The Valley. He was officially signed on a free as he was not contractually obliged to stay at Charlton. However, we had to pay Charlton a fee, decided by a tribunal, rising to £1.6m depending on appearances (including England appearances).

In Jermain's contract there was also a clause, wherein once Jermain had started 15 games for the Hammers he was to be offered a new contract. He is now just two starts off that target, and he is set for a huge windfall.

At the moment, he gets around £3,000 a week, with £3,000 bonus for every goal he scores. He would be in line for a rise up to £18,000 a week, although with Cole and Carrick both on £20,000 it might well be offered one more similar to theirs.

The new contract would also secure his future at Upton Park for a longer period of time, and keep the young talents together at West Ham for the forseeable future.

Jermain is certainly a part of West Ham's future, and with young players like Freddie Kanoute, Michael Carrick and Joe Cole also at the club - you would hope that the team will start to gel into one that can seriously contend for Europe.
