The former Tottenham Hotspur player who joined the Hammers in August 2003 has become one of the club’s most valuable assets and there has been much media speculation lately that he could be sold on in January as the board look to balance the books.

Etherington spoke recently to the Evening Standard and said, “I am more than happy at West Ham and I don't want to go anywhere.

“But it is up to the club. If they want to sell me, they will do. I have not been told anything.”

Alan Pardew has also gone on record to try and dismiss speculation by saying “I can't control speculation, but I don't believe I am under any pressure to sell.”
