Farewell Boleyn

With the club on the verge of it's ever impending move to the Olympic Stadium, the Hammers wanted to give their old girl a send off she'd never forget, and they didn't disappoint.

Visitors Manchester United we not going till over easy, however, as they had top four ambitions of their own, an ambition the East Londoners had themselves until their crushing defeat at the hands of Swansea at the weekend.

Louis Van Gaal's men had been boosted by rivals City's draw at home to Arsenal and knew a win would put them in the driving seat for the final Champions League place in the league table.

But Slaven Bilic' men were determined to erase the bad performance on Saturday and leave their old home with their heads held high, whilst still keeping alive their Europa League hopes.

The home side's night had the perfect start with Diafra Sakho striking a deflected shot off Daley Blind and past the in-form David De Gea, commence elated scenes from the home supporters.

Hammers fans were in extra loud voice throughout determined to make the atmosphere the best it could be one final time

Half time occurred with the West Ham leading 1-0 and a surge of fans heading to the nearest bar to soften their dry through with much needed refreshment.

The games high tempo continued into the second half and United came out stronger with Anthony Martial grabbing two goals and putting the jitters into the home side

This did not deter the home side however as the team, management and fans were determined to close the curtain on their historic stadium on a winning note.

Two goals in the space of five minutes from Michail Antonio and Winston Reid ensured that the famous old Boleyn Ground got the electric and humbled send off it truly deserved.

As the final whistle blew, Bilic shed tears that only someone with his background at the club could, the image of his bowed head and fingers pinching his eyelids was one that all Hammers fans could relate to.

The away side left the ground possibly wondering if the should made the trip at all with their Champions League hopes hanging in the balance and an urgently needed new team coach after it's barrage of abuse from a minority of fans outside the ground.

The game was followed by a farewell show that begin with a fireworks and lights presentation to the tune of "twist and shout" and included short interviews with former players and current captain Mark Noble by presenter duo and hammers fans Ben Sheppard and Bianca Westwood

A host of legendary players and former hammer of the year winners were paraded in front of an appreciative crowd and ended with the Cockney Rejects version of the club song.

It's onto pastures new for the east end club now and with the Olympic stadium completely sold out for the new season coming, the Hammers should have no fear they can push and become a major heavyweight for years to come.
