Ferdinand was carried off 10 minutes into the second half of the game at Maine Road after a collision with City keeper Peter Schmeichel and a broken leg was first feared.

However, after x-rays it has been confirmed that there is no break and the Hammers striker could even be fit for West Hams game against Chelsea this coming weekend.

Caretaker boss Trevor Brooking told BBC Radio Five Live: "Les went for an x-ray and he got the full clearance to travel back with us on crutches.

"It was a lot more encouraging by the time we got back into Stansted.

"It is very bad bruising and a couple of cuts on the leg, but I have not ruled him out for next weekend because I know the sort of character he is."
