Football- Its a funny old game

Spurs entertaining West Ham last weekend was always going to be one outcome, a home win. Every single football pundit, me included, called it as a comfortable home win. Even die hard Irons fans would have been thinking not if they could nick a result but by how many Spurs would win by.

Prior to the match, with Spurs having the most efforts on target in the league, an impressive 69 in just 7 matches and West Ham struggling with the least amount (just 14) the scene was set for a predictable result.

There is a saying in our beautiful game coined by Jimmy Greaves from the Saint and Greavsie programme and that is that ?football is a funny old game.? Let?s not kid ourselves; this was a coupon buster of major proportions.

Whilst Ravel Morrison?s goal, which effectively sealed the three points for West Ham was a bit special, it was helped in huge doses by uncharacteristic poor Spurs defending. Big Sam suggesting on MOTD2 that it was going to win goal of the season was funny and quite possibly indicative of the fact that this was a manager not used to seeing quality very often. Their first two goals were very fortunate indeed but in this game you make your own luck so West Ham thoroughly deserved the three points.

Daniel Levy will allow this slight blip. This result will be regarded as a bad day at the office but we can rest assured AvB won?t be allowed too many of these as the season goes on.

The game was also in the spotlight as the authorities cranked up the pressure in relation to the use of the Y-word. Only one Spurs fan was arrested at half time on suspicion of committing a Section 5 Public Order Offence. It seems the Metropolitan Police has served a shot across the bows towards the Spurs fans and it will be interesting to see how they react to the fact that arrests will now be a feature of their games if the Y-word continues to be used.

In fairness to Spurs fans, one can understand their frustration and the authorities need to be seen to be cracking down on any anti-Semitic chants directed to Spurs fans, otherwise they will feel very aggrieved about what they perceive to be unfair and one-sided criticism towards them.

What do you think?
