Ljungberg failed to make an impression in his first season at Upton Park making only 25 appearances and scoring only twice in an injury ravaged year and reports suggested that the Swede may be surplus to requirements after Alan Curbishley was ordered to cut the wage-bill before bringing in any fresh faces.

A move to Italy was said to be a possibility with Roma reportedly ready to offer the Hammers the same £3 million that they spent bringing Ljungberg across London from Arsenal.

His agent Claes Elefalk told setantasports.com, "I met with (Chief Executive) Scott Duxbury and the new general manager Gianluca Nani and they explained that Fredrik is very important for the future."
