It was reported last week that owner Bjorgolfur Gudmundsson had asked Curbs to cut his wage bill before looking at summer transfer targets and after a season full niggling injuries Ljungberg would be one of the first to be sacrificed.

Duxbury told the Echo, "Rumours that Freddie is leaving are nonsense. Freddie with his international experience is an important player for West Ham in reaching our goal, to play in Europe.

"His pedigree stands for itself.

"He is an important part of this club's future and he has already shown how important he can be for West Ham when available.

"Freddie is very popular at West Ham and I know that Freddie is very happy at the club."
