Hammers smash Liverpool

The Hammers attacked from the off, in the style that the Reds became known for last season.  They were ahead before many had even taken their seats in the ground.  Stewart Downing delivered a cross from a free-kick on the right.  James Tomkins rose highest to head back across goal for his central defensive partner Winston Reid to poke the ball home.

Diafra Sakho then hit his third goal for the club in as many games only 5 minutes later – delightfully chipping Simon Mignolet.

The Hammers continued to dominate until Raheem Sterling hit the rebound from a Mario Balotelli strike to draw the Reds level towards the end of the first half.

The visitors came at the Hammers strong in the second half but a fine defensive display nullified much of Liverpool’s attacking threat.  With the final whistle drawing nearer substitute Morgan Amalfitano scored his first goal for the club as he latched onto a through-ball from Stewart Downing to complete to rout and send the home fans home happy.
