Hammers victory pleases boss

Kanoute scored for West Ham
Irons manager Glenn Roeder seems to be satisfied with the way pre-season has gone for West Ham, and the last friendly was won by the Hammers, with another impressive display from in-form England International Joe Cole.

Joe was at the centre of most good moves, and it was unsurprising that he was the player who set up the match's solitary goal. Cole played a good through-ball to french striker Kanoute, who poked the ball into the back of the net.

Sinclair went close, whilst Defoe was unlucky not to maintain his record of scoring in all of West Ham's pre-season matches. Edouard Cisse made his debut in claret and blue, and played the first half with an assured but unnoteworthy performance.

Roeder said on the match: "I was pleased with the result and especially pleased with the first-half performance. They gave us a difficult work-out and I am pleased with the way we performed and the fact that we kept a clean sheet."

"Our play was bright and incisive and Joe Cole was at the hub of things."

The clean sheet would have been an important factor for Roeder, after conceding 5 against Reading in the previous fixture. But with Cole, who is still only 20 it must be remembered, coming to the fore now, and putting in some mature and creative performances Glenn must be rubbing his hands at the dawning of the new season.
