Kanoute going nowhere - for now

Kanoute: To Merseyside?
With fresh rumours abounding regarding Fredi Kanoute's summer moving plans, Glenn Roeder has stepped into the ring quickly to categorically deny any deal being done between the club and Liverpool - or any other club for that matter.

"Fredi is not for sale and I am sure he would not be happy about being described as second or third choice," Glenn said.

It is clear that Glenn is keen on Fredi to stay, and that he sees him as part of a small group of players at the club that he would like to build a team around. Michael Carrick and Trevor Sinclair are two others he is insistent that are staying:

"As with Michael Carrick and Trevor Sinclair already this season, this is all pure speculation. I have no requirement to sell any of the players and Fredi is one of a nucleus around which I want to build.

"I can understand a club like Liverpool being interested in Fredi because he has power and pace but he is worth a great deal more than £10m."

Fredi himself is not quite so clear on the subject, however:

"I have had no contact with Liverpool this year but these stories suggest their interest remains, and if this is the case, I may have a lot to think about over the summer.

"If any offer is interesting to me from a purely footballing rather than financial point of view, then I have to consider every possibility. I think the same applies to any player and I am no different."

It has always been obvious to Hammers fans that Fredi saw West Ham as a stepping stone into English football, and hopefully the French squad - following similar routes to the likes of Henry and Viera.

He is not ruling out a move with anything like the same passion as his manager, and his words will not comfort West Ham fans in the slightest:

"I have always made my desire to stay with West Ham clear but this desire is not blind and I cannot close my eyes to new horizons.

"I am still fully focused on my job at West Ham. I believe the team has enjoyed a great season after a terrible start and I have enjoyed being part of the side, despite a few hamstring injury setbacks. What will happen in the summer and next season is still a mystery to me."

It's a mystery to us too - but one thing is for sure: Glenn won't let him go for peanuts.
