And, the 37-year-old former Charlton and Newcastle midfielder, who was released by Derby County at the end of tlast season, revealed his delight at finally signing for his home-town club.

"It has taken me 20 years to get to West Ham," Lee told the BBC Online website.

"I was linked with them when I was at Newcastle and it has finally come true and I am absolutely delighted.

"It is no secret that it has been my ambition to play for my home-town club for many, many years.

"I have been desperate to join them and although it has taken a long time it is worth it.

"I feel that I can lend my experience to the undoubtedly talented younger players at the club," added Lee. "If I can help them in any way then great.

"The main objective is to get West Ham back where they belong, which is in the Premiership.

"But it will not be easy - when I was at Derby last season it was obvious that teams were raising their game against one of the division's so-called bigger clubs.

"There were a lot of youngsters at Derby and they couldn't handle it, but if West Ham can keep their own talent then there is no other squad in Division One that I would rather be in."
