Matty was substituted at half time in the Hammers’ 1-0 victory over Wolves at Upton Park on Saturday. It was later confirmed he had damaged a groin muscle and will be need an operation to repair it. The operation will take place later today.

West Ham manager Alan Pardew was obviously disappointed with the blow but is hopeful Etherington can return to action sooner rather than later. “We're hoping he'll only be missing for about three weeks.” Pardew said.

The Hammers will be hoping that Etherington can make a speedy recovery in time for the Carling Cup tie against Chelsea at the end of the month.
