News Round-up

Gary Charles has been forced to retire from the club due to a knee injury. For those of you that haven't actually heard of the player (and let's face it, there are probably a few of you), he was signed by Harry Redknapp in October 1999 from Benefica for £1.2m.

He has featured in a total of 6 matches, making him one of Harry's less-inspired signings. Having been a West Ham fan since he was a kid, his failure to make it at Upton Park, although hampered by injury is not a happy one.

MD Paul Aldridge said on the club's site: "We wish Gary all the best for the future; he hasn't had the best of times since coming here and it is a shame that his career has come to an end without us seeing the best of him."

Gary Breen has signed for the Hammers on a free transfer from Coventry, as reported by WestHammersFC back in May. The Republic of Ireland World Cup star took his time to put pen to paper on the deal, but he is confident that he has made the right choice by teaming up with his former team mate, Glenn Roeder.

"I feel I have made the right decision, and I have worked with Glenn, who also played in my position, when I was at Gillingham - so I hope to learn even more now I have signed for West Ham," he told the club site.

"I expect to play the best football of my career and feel that I am coming into my prime now. My best football is ahead of me. Fingers crossed I can learn more from Glenn, and in the next four or five years I will be coming into my best form.

"I had a reasonably successful World Cup, though it is just disappointing the way it ended. If we hadn't gone out on penalties, who knows what would have happened? I come to this club with a lot of confidence, and I am focused on having a good start with West Ham and I will deal with the European Championships when they start in September."

With Gary signing, there is at last some good competition for places in the centre of defence, with Christian Dailly, Tomas Repka and Ian Pearce also fighting for the centre berths.

Raggy Soma has left the club for a small fee to go back to Byrne - the club where Harry Redknapp bought him from. Glenn has allowed the young Norwegian to go for an undisclosed fee - thought to be in the region of £500,000, well below the £800,000 paid for him a year and a half ago.

Glenn said: "We had an offer from the club that we bought him from, Bryne, and I felt that although we had to take a loss on the transfer it is right that he goes back to Norway.

"He was prepared to stay but I felt that I couldn't give him any encouragement that he would make the first team this year and he needs to play senior football at his age.I think it is best that he gets his career going back in the Premier league in Norway.

"He was a terrific professional and excellent to work with on a daily basis but he found it difficult to break into the team. I like the lad a lot and I wish him all the best back in Norway, and, who knows, maybe in a few years' time he will come back to central Europe."

Finally, Michael Carrick has been handed the number six shirt - famously sported by Hammers and England legend Bobby Moore. Glenn has decided to promote Michael from number 21 - the shirt he has worn ever since his full Hammers debut in August 1999.

Jermain Defoe has also been promoted from number 25 to number 9 - suggesting that he will play an even bigger part at the club this season, which will no doubt please Hammer fans.

"I spoke to Michael Carrick and Jermain Defoe and offered them the opportunity to have single figure shirts; there wasn't a number nine last year and Jermain Defoe has decided to take that," explained Glenn.

"The six is a really special shirt in the hearts of all West Ham supporters; it is amazing that at certain clubs around the world a certain number has a special meaning, normally because of a great player that once wore that shirt."

Gary Breen is going to take 15, Richard Garcia will take Michael Carrick's old 21 shirt, Youssef Sofiane will wear 18, Raimond van der Gouw 17, Glen Johnson 23, and Anton Ferdinand will be allocated a number as well.
