Pardew said, “I made a mistake in mentioning Andrew's name, I shouldn't have and I apologise to Iain.

“I know Iain well and I certainly don't want to upset or disrupt his plans.”

Alan believes a mis-understanding was to blame for the incident saying, “I got asked a question - would I be interested in Andrew Johnson?

“I said I would be interested in any quality striker who becomes available in the window.

“There are lots of names being thrown at me every week and this was just a misunderstanding.

“I'm looking to make West Ham a better team and everyone knows I am in the market and with the very good base I have here, I'm only looking for top quality.

“Bobby Zamora, Teddy Sheringham and Marlon Harewood have all been terrific. We're interested in any player that becomes available, whoever that may be.”

Dowie has again stated that Andy Johnson will not be for sale in January.

“If we sold AJ in the window, what sort of message would that send?

“It would suggest we had given up and gone home, and that is not what I'm about.”
