He told reporters, “Anybody who was at the game today would see that we deserved a point.

“We didn't really feel that Tottenham were hurting us too much, but with the team we had out today - with Mark Noble, and Matty Etherington and Yossi - we were never going to win a war, so we had to play.

“I didn't think we worked hard enough in the first half, but in the second half we played a bit more and I felt we deserved something. It was a great result for us because we knew how much it meant to our fans. This was a big fixture for them so it's a great result.”

Pardew singled out 18-year-old midfielder Mark Noble for special praise after the Academy graduate’s excellent Premiership debut. He said, “Noble suddenly came alive and his battle with Davids was a joy to behold.

“He's a special talent. He's not there yet but the potential is there to be an England player. It was a tough call for him today but he got better as the game went on.”
