Pardew has been trying to improve his squad but is finding some clubs valuations far too much for his budget. He told The Sun newspaper, “We have made two bids for players this week.

“We are in negotiations with other clubs which are very delicate. A layman would find it hard to believe some of the figures being suggested.

One of Pardew’s targets is Norwich City’s Dean Ashton who Pardew was said to have offered £5 million for however Norwich remain insist that Ashton will not leave Carrow Road for less then £7.5 million.

“As a football manager, I find some of them hard to digest as well. I am just trying to keep a logical head on it all.

“We are trying to find a medium ground which is proving not easy.

“If you take a player in this window, you are probably going to pay over the odds. But I'm not going to put the club at risk.”
