Police Confirm 2 West Ham Fans Arrested for Allegedly Making Homophobic Gestures

Metropolitan Police have confirmed that two West Ham fans have been arrested for allegedly making homophobic gestures during the Hammers' 3-3 draw with Brighton on Saturday.

The two men involved have been released under investigation, but the incident highlights the issue of homophobia in football, and this incident is just one of a number reported at Premier League matches this season.

Another West Ham fan was arrested for an alleged assault, but has also been released.

As quoted by ​BBC Sport, a Metropolitan Police spokesperson stated: "Two male West Ham fans were arrested on suspicion of making homophobic gestures.

"One male (also a West Ham fan) was arrested on suspicion of common assault. They were taken to east London police stations where they were subsequently released under investigation. Enquiries continue."

Last December, ​West Ham fans were allegedly involved in homophobic chanting at Stamford Bridge during the side's victory over ​Chelsea. Meanwhile, ​Everton fans were also reportedly targeting Chelsea supporters during their meeting at Goodison Park earlier in the season.

West Ham have since reacted to Saturday's incident with a statement of their own, commenting: "West Ham United is disgusted to hear of alleged homophobic incidents at the game against Brighton & Hove Albion.

"The matter is now with the police but anyone found guilty of acting in a discriminatory manner will be banned for life from London Stadium and from travelling with the club.

"The club is unequivocal in its stance - we have a zero-tolerance approach to any form of discrimination. 

"Equality and diversity is at the heart of the football club and we are committed to continue ensuring that everyone who enters London Stadium is free to enjoy watching their team play football in an inclusive environment."

Homophobia has been rife in football for some time, and has been met with stricter punishments this season, with a number of arrests having taken place across the country.
