Last updated : 09 February 2006 By Plymouth_hammer

Ron managed the Hammers from 1961 to 1974 winning the FA Cup for the first time in the clubs history in 1964. He then went on to lift the European Cup Winners Cup after beating TSV Munich at Wembley in 1965.

The great man then managed the National team between 1977 and 1982 taking England to the 1980 European Championships and The 1982 World Cup in Spain.

Another West Ham legend, Geoff Hurst, lead the tributes to Ron this morning saying, “I am really sad to hear this.

“It would not be overstating the case to say that Ron Greenwood was the single most influential figure in my career.

“I considered it a privilege to play for him.

“He opened the door to the world of modern football.”

Former England goalkeeper Peter Shilton described Ron’s death as “very sad news” saying “Ron was a real football man in the sense that he loved to play the right way.

“I was very lucky to be associated with the England team when Ron was in charge.

“He appreciated quality players and skill, which is what you need at international level.”

Ron leaves behind a widow Lucy, two children, five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

All of Hammers Mad’s condolences and thoughts go to Ron’s family at this time.
