West Ham dominated possession and had 25 total shots against Southampton at St Mary’s, but it was a Declan Rice equaliser that earned the Hammers a point on the south coast.
Full-back Romain Perraud fired Southampton into a first half lead when he scored from distance, sending a left-footed shot from 25 yards low into the bottom corner.
The Saints had actually had more chance in the opening exchanges and were probably good value for the lead at that stage. Yet the visiting Hammers assumed control and began to pepper the home goal with efforts.
Most missed the target, which will have disappointed David Moyes, but Gavin Bazunu also made a number of saves over the course of the match. Lukasz Fabianski actually made more saves in the opposite, highlighting a more accurate Southampton radar.
West Ham’s equaliser came midway through the second half, with Rice sending an effort from just outside the corner of the box into the far corner.
The result brings an end to West Ham’s recent winning run, although they remain comfortably in mid-table after recovering from a poor start to the campaign. Southampton continue to sit in the bottom three, although at least ended a streak of four consecutive wins.
