The Foxe Escapes

Farewell to Hayden
Harry Redknapp has bought his second Hammer reject since becoming Portsmouth manager - after signing Bulgarian misfit Svetoslav Todorov in the summer - by signing Australian central defender Hayden Foxe.

The ginger haired Ozzie was a target for the Hammers for some time, and was signed on a free from Sanfrecce Hiroshima in the summer 2000. However, he wasn't given a work permit at first, and after several appeals, West Ham eventually received the permit after Hayden married his French girlfriend last spring.

Harry said about the transfer: "I'm extremely pleased to bring Hayden to Portsmouth, he's a great player, big, strong, good in the air he'll do a great job for us."

Hayden wore the Number 6 shirt at Upton Park - the shirt that is synonymous with Hammers and England legend Bobby Moore. Although Hayden was often compared to Rio Ferdinand by Harry - fans at Upton Park never saw the likeness themselves, and won't be too upset by his departure.

There was a fee involved in the transfer, according to Hammers Managing Director, Paul Aldridge, but hthe exact amount hasn't been disclosed.

Hayden certainly seems to be looking forward to the move, anc in particular linking up with Harry again: "I'm coming to Portsmouth because of their fanatical support and because of Harry Redknapp. I don't know a lot about Portsmouth but I do know that Harry wouldn't go to a club where he didn't think he could succeed. After talking with Harry I'm convinced that Portsmouth are a club going in the right direction."

"It was a good time for me to move clubs, I felt my career was on hold at West Ham and it was frustrating not to get first team football so it was a natural thing to start looking elsewhere. Once I'd spoken to Portsmouth and Harry I was in no doubt that this was the right club for me. I don't see it as a step down, I see it as a great challenge, to come in and play and make a major impact."

We wish Hayden all the luck at his new club, and are once again grateful to Harry for taking another player off our hands in return for a fee. Does Harry realise that Titi Camara, Rigobert Song and Gary Charles are all available for transfer too? Here's hoping...
