West Ham & Bayern Target Unai Nunez Turns Down Contract Extension at Athletic Club

Athletic Club defender Unai Nunez has rejected several offers of a new contract at the club, with West Ham and Bayern interested in triggering his €30m release clause.

The 23-year-old hasn't been able to nail down a starting spot this season, starting in just seven games for Athletic in La Liga.

Nunez, who made his senior debut for the Spanish national side in September 2019, has been unable to displace Inigo Martinez and Yeray Alvarez at club level.

Nevertheless, Spanish outlet La Razon report that Athletic are keen for him to sign a new deal to raise his release clause, with West Ham and Bayern interested in taking him away from San Mames.

However, Nunez would still prefer his clause to stand at the current amount, as he would be interested in seeing what kind of offers come in for him this summer, particularly if he can't work his way back into the starting XI.

Athletic boss Gaizka Garitano was asked about the speculation regarding Nunez's future, and insisted the defender wants to stay at the club.

“He knows that the club and coaching staff have been wanting to renew for a long time because for us it is very important, he is a player for the present and future for the club," he said. "It is in his hands to stay and let's see.

"Hopefully he stays, we would not like to lose a player of such value to us. What he wants is to stay in Athletic, he has already said it more than once. Hopefully the circumstances arise so that it stays."

While Bayern have depth at centre-back, West Ham could certainly do with upgrades in defence, though a player of Nunez's calibre would be out of reach if they were to be relegated this season.

The Hammers currently sit in 18th place in the Premier League, and now head into a tough run which includes games against Manchester City, Liverpool, Arsenal, Wolves, Tottenham and Chelsea.
