West Ham Eye Besiktas Centre-Back Domagoj Vida But Move 'Dependent on Premier League Survival'

West Ham are plotting a move for Besiktas centre-back Domagoj Vida come the summer transfer window, but will only be able to push forward with a deal if they manage to avoid relegation.

The 30-year-old, who was part of the Croatian squad that reached the World Cup final, boasts vast experience at club and international level. He has clocked up 487 career appearances to date, with an impressive 79 caps for his country.

As is reported by Turkish media outlet Takvim, Vida has emerged as one of David Moyes' top transfer targets for the summer transfer window, but a move is dependent on the Hammers remaining in the Premier League.

West Ham are keen to strengthen their options in the centre of defence. Winston Reid's future at the club is uncertain, Fabian Balbuena has yet to convince he can perform on a consistent basis, and Angelo Ogbonna turns 32 in May.

The Croatian defender is renowned for his tenacity, and tough-tackling in the defensive third. However, his ability on the ball is also impressive - he has averaged an impressive 54 passes per game in the Turkish Liga, with a completion rate of 90.6%.

Vida's current club Besiktas are reported to be open to selling their experienced defender because of current financial problems. Last year, it was suggested the Turkish outfit valued him at £8.5m.

But, any possibility of a move to east London would disappear if the Irons were to be relegated at the end of the campaign. They are currently 18th in the league, a point from safety.

As was reported by 90min in November, West Ham were interested in a move for Vida during the January transfer window given their difficulties at the back throughout the season.

It remains to be seen whether Vida fits the profile of defender the Irons ought to be targeting. After all, he turns 31 in April, and whether he can adapt to the physical demands and pace of the Premier League is another question.

However, his vast experience, and clear defensive strengths could make Vida a target worth pursuing, with David Moyes and West Ham looking for defensive reinforcements.
