West Ham Reveal Extent of Latest Lukasz Fabianski Hip Injury

West Ham goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski will be sidelined for just 'a couple of weeks' after suffering a fresh hip injury - a knock in a similar region to the one that saw him miss three months of action earlier in the campaign.

The Poland international was substituted less than 15 minutes into the Hammers' 1-0 defeat at Sheffield United on Friday evening, which was his fourth outing since returning from surgery. Despite the club's concerns, scans have revealed the problem is not as serious as first feared.

Lukasz Fabianski

West Ham released a statement on their official website confirming Fabianski's absence would not be a prolonged one, with head medic Richard Collinge saying: "It is good news in the sense that Lukasz hasn’t aggravated or suffered any recurrence of the previous injury.

"The scan has showed some slight inflammation and irritation of scar tissue, which is quite common after surgery, and obviously the source of the discomfort he felt on Friday.

"We now just need to let the inflammation settle down and expect Lukasz to be available again within a couple of weeks."

Fabianski was out of action for much of the opening half of the season after tearing hip muscles against Bournemouth.

David Moyes

Roberto took over between the sticks for the Hammers during that period, but his hapless performances drew heavy criticism from supporters as the Londoners tumbled down the Premier League standings.

Veteran shot-stopper David Martin has since taken over the role of second-choice goalkeeper, with the 33-year-old coming on to replace Fabianski at Bramall Lane.

However, he may find himself relegated to third in the pecking order once more following comments from new West Ham boss David Moyes, who has claimed the Irons will 'certainly look at' bringing in another goalkeeper.

Of course, the Scot was speaking before Fabianski was properly assessed by the club's medical team. The picture has changed since then, and there is now far less concern over the Pole's fitness, meaning Martin may well retain his place as understudy.
