The forward had endured a mixed spell at former Champions' League winners Liverpool having moved from Blackburn, but with Harewood set to leave and Sheringham having been released, Alan Curbishley has moved quickly to strengthen his front line.

Bellamy's career has been tarred with discplinary problems but he should settle in well at Upton Park, joining fellow international team mates Danny Gabbidon and James Collins in the claret and blue.

News broke as the Liverpool boss spoke after his side's 3-2 friendly win against Wrexham. Benitez told Sky Sports News:

"He's signed for West Ham, it's done.

"He knew what I thought and I think it's a good move for him."

The BBC are reporting a fee of £8mil. The deal has not however involved the departure of Yossi Benayoun for whom Rafa Benitez had a 'derisory' bid rejected only a few weeks ago.

There may be a renewed offer forthcoming but there are conflicting reports surrounding the nature of Benayoun's contract offer at West Ham. Some claim the lucrative 5 year improved offer has been withdrawn by the club and if so Benayoun can be expected to leave.
