Hammers succumb to Charlton

Carrick: Poor game
Was this game to be the morning after the week before.

Last weekend West Ham had run the Champions ragged and were unlucky not to win. All who follow West Ham know that one top drawer performance does not mean that another will follow. Usually the opposite occurs, and while today's was not as poor as we have been it was no great shakes.

Charlton came into the game with injury problems and West Ham came into it with the same team as last weekend.

However the same old defensive frailites returned with Dailly slipping back into old ways and the full backs struggling to pick players up.

In the middle Carrick was mostly anoynomous or when he did play the ball is was to the opposition or into touch. Anything promising came from Cole but he slipped back into his old age problem of trying the little tricks when the simple things would have done.

Up front, Kanoute huffed and puffed and basically phaffed while Defoe was much ado about nothing.

The goals: Jensen scored after 4 minutes after Youngs throw caught the defence napping. Fortune scored the second after 44 minutes with a shot through a crowded penalty area.

Charlton played as if they wanted it more whilst for West Ham Cisse played well in the midfield, getting stuck is whereas the previously mentioned Michael Carrick didn't seem to be bothered by it all.

The watching Sven Goran Erricson surely couldn't have seen much to pick him for the squad for the Portugal game next weekend.

Schemmel raced up and down the line but too often the final ball in was poor and when Steve Lomas returned to the first team from the bench Cisse was taken off whereas Carrick should have been the one.

Time after time in the second half West Ham swept forward but could not make the final ball count. In the last 15 minutes Titi Camara was introduced as West Ham tried to hit Charlton with 3 up front, but when you have little service, and to be fair no luck and some quite poor refeering decisions it was not meant to be.
