Result: West Ham 3 - 1 Ipswich Town

Last updated : 30 March 2002 By Mike Reich
West Ham went in at half time in the lead, thanks to a Lomas headed opener from a di Canio cross. The opening minutes of the second half however, were dominated by Ipswich, who had the Irons pinned back in their own half.

West Ham had chance after chance to extend their lead, but spurned them, with Freddie Kanoute especially culpable today. Fans were calling for Jermian Defoe not long after the break.

The idea of introducing Defoe was emphasised when, following poor defending by Tomas Repka, Findi George was able to score for Ipswich and make their pressure count for something. Luckily for those supporting in claret and blue though, their equaliser only mattered for a few minutes.

Paolo di Canio followed up on his own fantastic shot, saved by Mareni, to volley the ball home, and put West Ham back in the lead. Ipswich continued to apply the pressure, but West Ham had the last word, when Jermain Defoe made it three for the Irons.
