In an eight goal thriller where West Ham went ahead twice within 20 minutes and Man United came back twice within 20 minutes, you knew one side was going to go home disappointed.

Opening the rout of goals was the most unlikely of all in claret and blue, Steve Lomas on his return from injury. Following his lead was Nicky Butt, Freddie Kanoute and David Beckham, who went on to steal the show.

The scores stayed at 2-2 as the sides went in at half time with Man U in control, and it was clear that the match was far from over.

Indeed, within 10 minutes of the restart, the Reds took the lead for the first time in the match, and the first time in three games between the two sides. It was a simple tap in by Scholes, who received the ball from Solskjaer follonwing poor defending by the Hammers.

More dire work at the back let in another goal less than 10 minutes later, with provider turning scorer, with Ole scoring his first of the day to make it 4-2.

Glenn finally gave the crowd what they wanted 15 minutes later by bringing on Jermian Defoe for Winterburn, and within 5 minutes the youngster was on the score sheet. The Hammers faithful were cheering with delight, and sensed that the match was far from over, but it was too little to late by the Hammers boss.

Indeed it was David Beckham who had the final word, with a penalty kick two minutes from time, after referee Halsey adjudged that Repka had fouled in the box.
