West Ham 0 Charlton 2

They may have lost both their home games but yet again there were no away day blues for Charlton as they comfortably strode to a second win on their travels.

"We got off to a perfect start, defended fantastically and went on to a deserved win," beamed Alan Curbishley after first-half goals from Claus Jensen and Jon Fortune gave his side a 100 per cent away record.

"Upton Park definitely isn't an easy place to come to."

Indeed Charlton came sprinting out of the blocks as the stumbling Richard Rufus nudged the ball back to Jensen who powered the south Londoners into a third minute lead with a rising ten-yard effort that sizzled under the right-hand angle.

In reply, Edouard Cisse and Joe Cole threatened Dean Kiely with awkward 20-yard efforts.

But as the half-hour mark approached Hammers had Nigel Winterburn to thank for keeping them in the contest when he headed clear from Chris Bart-Williams after David James had missed his punch.

On the stroke of half time though, the Addicks did grab a second when Fortune slid home from ten yards following a frantic goalmouth scramble that had initially seen Mathias Svensson's header scrambled off the line as the fragile Hammers defence failed to deal with Jensen's corner.

With Sven Goran Eriksson looking on, an electrified Cole did his best to ignite a second-half recovery but sadly his Hammers team-mates were not on the same wavelength, and although Winterburn, Frederic Kanoute and Titi Camara all went close, the disappointed Eastenders were streaming away long before the final whistle.

"Those two goals proved our undoing and we were left with a mountain to climb," observed Glenn Roeder as he looked at the Premiership table that shows his side languishing in 19th place.

"We created half-chances, had plenty of possession but the longer it went on I just knew it wasn't going to be our day."
